Marketing for photo tools tends to imply that anything can be fixed. Some things genuinely can. Some cannot, and knowing which is which saves you the coins.
Fixed well
Expression. Closed eyes and missing smiles reconstruct convincingly, because the face is right there to rebuild from.
Tone and exposure. Uneven skin tone from mixed lighting, faces underexposed against a window, harsh midday shadows — all of this is correction rather than invention, and it is where a single pass makes the biggest visible difference.
Temporary blemishes. A spot present on one day is not a structural feature, and removing it leaves nothing missing.
Background clutter. Objects and background people, when there is enough surrounding scene to rebuild from.
Fixed badly
Severe motion blur. Blur is lost information. Anything sharp that comes back is invented, and it usually shows.
Very small faces. A face forty pixels across in a group shot has no detail to work from.
Full profiles. Expression edits need to see the feature they are changing. A face turned fully away does not offer that.
Reflections. Change something in the scene and its reflection in a window or mirror usually goes unchanged, which is a strange kind of wrong.
Not recoverable
A photo where the subject is out of frame, blown to pure white, or crushed to pure black has no data in that region. There is nothing to edit — only something to generate, which is a different photograph.
