What AI Image to Video does

Image-to-video takes a still and works out what would plausibly happen next. Not a pan across a photograph — actual movement: hair lifting, steam rising, a person shifting their weight, the camera easing forward while the scene holds together.

The still does most of the work. A photograph with an obvious direction of motion — someone mid-stride, water about to fall, a curtain near an open window — gives the model something to continue. A flat, static, evenly-lit image gives it nothing, and the result is usually a slow drift that looks like a screensaver.

How long the clip runs and how much it moves are the two settings that matter, and they trade against each other. Longer clips have more time to lose the thread.

Getting a better result

  • Pick a still that implies motion. The model continues what is already there; it does not invent a reason to move.
  • Say what should move and what should not. "Camera pushes in slowly, subject still" is a far better instruction than "make it cinematic".
  • Start short. Four seconds that hold together beat ten that fall apart, and you pay by the second.
  • Faces need room. A subject filling the frame gives the model less margin, and faces are where drift is most visible.
  • Check the hands and the text in the frame first — both are where a generated clip gives itself away.

What it will not do

  • It does not know what is behind anything. Move the camera far and the model invents the rest of the room.
  • Text, logos and small print will not survive intact. Whatever is written in the still will smear.
  • It cannot follow a script. One shot, one continuous movement; a sequence is several runs stitched together.
  • Long clips drift. Detail that was sharp at second one is usually approximate by second ten.
