Why removals smear
Older removal tools work by copying nearby pixels into the gap. That works when the surroundings are uniform — plain wall, open sky, flat grass — and fails everywhere else, because the copied patch has the wrong perspective, the wrong lighting gradient, or repeats a pattern in a way the eye catches instantly.
The result is the smear: a soft, detail-free region exactly where something used to be. It draws more attention than the object did.
What a clean fill requires
The scene has to continue, not be papered over. Straight lines that ran behind the object have to meet on the other side. Texture has to keep its scale — brick further away is smaller. Light has to fall the same way it does either side of the gap.
A model that understands the scene can do this. A patch-copying algorithm cannot, because it has no idea what it is looking at.
The hard cases
Objects overlapping the subject need two reconstructions at once — the background and the part of the person that was hidden. Reflective surfaces are worse: remove something standing in front of a window and its reflection is still there, which most tools miss entirely.
Doing it in Retake
Under Background, tick Clear the clutter. It targets stray objects — bins, cables, signs, bags — and asks for the scene behind them to be rebuilt with matching texture and perspective. Add Remove other people when the frame has both.
FAQ
Can I choose exactly which object to remove? Not by pointing. The preset removes distracting background clutter as a class; picking one specific item needs a manual selection tool.
Will it remove something I wanted to keep? It targets things that read as clutter. Anything central to the photo, or held by the subject, stays.
Does it work on busy backgrounds? Better than patch-based tools, because it rebuilds rather than copies. But a background that is mostly the object you are removing leaves little to rebuild from.
Can it remove a watermark? No. Removing someone else's watermark is not something this is for.
