Nothing announces a retouched photo faster than teeth. It is the edit people notice on other people's pictures without noticing on their own.
The two tells
Pure white. Real enamel is never white. It is off-white with a faint warm or grey cast, and it varies slightly from tooth to tooth. Pushed to pure white it stops reading as enamel and starts reading as paper.
Lost separation. Whitening applied bluntly fills in the thin shadows between teeth and along the gum line. The result is a single bright shape where there should be individual teeth, which is the version that looks like a sticker.
What natural means here
The target is one or two shades brighter than what is there, keeping the variation between teeth and the small shadows that separate them. Enough that the photo looks well-lit rather than corrected.
Lighting matters more than you expect
Teeth photographed under warm indoor light pick up that warmth. Neutralising the cast usually does most of the work on its own, before any whitening — which is why a general exposure and colour pass sometimes solves the problem without touching the teeth at all.
