The complaint about AI photo tools is rarely that the output looks bad. It is that it looks good and is not quite you — the nose is a little straighter, the jaw a little narrower, the eyes a little wider. You have been quietly moved towards an average.
Why drift happens
Image models are trained on enormous numbers of faces, and their idea of a face is a blend of all of them. Ask broadly — "make this photo better" — and the model has nothing pinning it to your face specifically, so it fills the gaps with the average it knows. Every ungoverned detail moves a fraction towards the mean.
None of the individual shifts are large. Together they produce a person your friends would describe as "you, but off".
What stops it
Two things, and both are about the instruction rather than the model.
Name one change. A prompt that asks for a single specific edit gives the model far less licence than one asking for general improvement.
Say what must not move. Identity, facial structure, skin texture, pose, framing, lighting. A prompt without that clause is permission to redraw everything.
Why repeated editing is the real risk
Even a well-constrained edit moves a little. Run it four times in sequence — each pass re-drawing from the last output rather than the original — and those small movements compound. This is why editing tools that chain operations produce faces that slowly become somebody else.
The fix is to batch. Every change in one instruction, one pass, from the original photograph.
