Most browser trimmers do one of two things wrong. They cut to the nearest keyframe — so your cut lands up to two seconds away from where you dragged — or they re-encode the whole file for every tiny change, which takes minutes and softens the picture. Here is how cutting works in Video Studio, and why it is instant.
Editing is a cut list, not a render
A clip on the timeline is a pointer into a file plus an in-point and an out-point. Dragging a handle changes two numbers. Splitting a clip in two produces two pointers at the same file — nothing is copied, nothing is uploaded, nothing is re-encoded.
That is why every edit is instant and free, and why you can change your mind fifty times without degrading anything. The video is only rendered once, when you press Export.
Trimming
Click a clip. Two handles appear on its ends; drag them inward to set where the clip starts and stops. The strip shows the new length as you drag.
Trims are applied at the exact second you chose. Cutting on a copy would snap to the nearest keyframe, which on a five-second generated clip can be a second away from the moment you wanted — so trimmed clips are re-encoded on export while untouched ones are copied as-is.
Splitting
Put the playhead where you want the cut — click anywhere on a clip, and the head lands at that point — then press Split. You get two clips you can move, trim or delete independently.
Splitting is how you remove something from the middle: split before it, split after it, delete the piece between.
Keeping the good take
A practical recipe for tightening a long clip:
- Play it once and stop at the first good moment.
- Split there and delete the head.
- Play on, stop where it stops being good, split, delete the tail.
- Repeat for each section worth keeping.
Because splits are free, you can cut a five-minute recording into a thirty-second piece without ever waiting for a render.
Photos are different
A photo on the timeline has no footage to trim — it has a duration you choose. Drag its out-handle to hold it longer (up to a minute). Splitting a photo is deliberately disabled: it would just give you two identical photos.
Exporting
Export renders the cut list into a single MP4 at the size and frame rate you set in Settings. Each export gets its own link, so a link you already shared keeps playing the version you shared.
FAQ
Is the cut frame-accurate? Yes. Trimmed clips are re-encoded so the cut lands where you put it, not on the nearest keyframe.
Does trimming reduce quality? Only the trimmed clip is re-encoded, and only once, at export. Untrimmed clips are copied without being touched.
Can I undo a trim? Drag the handle back out — the original file is never modified, so the whole clip is always there.
How long can a video be? Uploads are capped at 100 MB per file; a timeline can hold as many clips as you need.
