How AI Headshot Generators Work — and How to Get One That Looks Like You

Two kinds of AI headshot tool, why one photo can be enough, the source photo that works, and what it will not do.

How AI Headshot Generators Work — and How to Get One That Looks Like You

An AI headshot generator takes an ordinary photo of you and returns the portrait a studio would have taken: plain backdrop, business clothing, soft front light. There are two very different ways tools do this, and which one you pick decides how long it takes, what it costs and how much the result still looks like you.

The two kinds of AI headshot tool

Training tools. You upload a batch of selfies — often 10 to 20 — the service trains a small model on your face, and a while later you get a pack of dozens of headshots. The batch is what lets it learn your face from many angles; the trade-off is the wait, the upfront price for the pack, and a set where only a few shots usually make the cut.

Edit tools. You upload one photo and an image-edit model changes the setting around you — background, clothes, light — while being told to leave your face alone. There is no training step, so a result comes back in about a minute, and you pay per picture rather than per pack. The quality depends almost entirely on that one source photo.

Reelina's AI headshot generator is the second kind. It runs Alibaba's Wan 2.7 Pro image-edit model with a fixed instruction to keep your identity exactly as it is. One photo is enough; each run costs 24 coins, and the price is shown on the button before you press it.

What makes the source photo work

Because an edit tool works from a single picture, the picture matters more than anything else:

  • Front-facing, eye level or slightly above. A photo from below rarely survives the edit well.
  • Daylight, face fully visible. No sunglasses, no hand on the chin, no hair across the eyes.
  • Sharp, not filtered. A beauty filter cannot be undone, and the model will keep the plastic look.
  • Plain clothing. The model dresses you for business, but a loud pattern can leave traces.
  • Some space above your head, so a square profile crop does not cut your hair.

If a result changes your face more than you like, run it again from a different photo rather than the same one. The input matters more than luck.

What it will not do

  • It edits one person. A group photo is not split into separate headshots.
  • It keeps your identity on purpose, so it will not make you look younger, thinner or like someone else.
  • It cannot rebuild a realistic face from a heavily filtered or low-resolution selfie.
  • It is for your own photo, or one you have permission to use. Uploading someone who has not agreed is against the acceptable-use policy.

Where people use the result

LinkedIn, a CV or job application that asks for a portrait, a company team page, a conference speaker page, a podcast or author bio, a freelancer profile. The output is full resolution with no watermark and can be used commercially.

Cost, in plain numbers

Each headshot is 24 coins. Reelina has no free tier: coins come with a plan or a one-off pack, and the same balance runs every other image, video and sound model on the site. Generations are kept for seven days, so download the ones you want.
